A Secret History Of Brunswick County – From the earliest days of European exploration to the golf courses and beach resorts in this fascinating and fast-growing region, Brunswick County has attracted settlers, invaders, and visitors of all descriptions.

In these pages you’ll read about Steve Bonnet, the “Gentleman Pirate,” who hid his ships in Brunswick’s moss-draped creeks but unfortunately underestimated the ebbing tide; “Mrs. Calabash,” who’s said to have lent her name to the famous sign-off for Jimmy Durante’s classic radio shows; and Topsy the Elephant, who swam for the Brunswick riverbank after breaking loose from circus handlers in the 1920s.

Follow the struggles and victories that shaped Brunswick County, from the first contact of Europeans with native Americans, to successive administrations of the Lords Proprietors, the royal governors, the British crown, and the leaders of a new nation—many at whom hailed from this small but influential corner of North Carolina. Discover Brunswick’s rich Civil War history, scenic roadways and waterways and current-day towns and townships.

Tales of the Silver Coast, recounts the tales of privateers and plantation owners, politicians and Prohibition rum-runners and the many colorful people and diverse places of southeastern North Carolina.
Hard Cover $24.95

“Miller has done an exceptional job keeping the tone light while still being informative. Each story is only two to three pages long, with illustrations liberally spread throughout, making it perfect for children. Young and old will love the story of the Barefoot Felon, where a captain uses a simple trick to save his ship from pirates.”

The nest is the first known ever known to nest here.

Back on June first a six-and-a-half foot long leatherback turtle, estimated to weigh around 900 pounds, nested here on Holden Beach.

By late evening Thursday, August 5th, over 50 leatherback baby turtles had hatched successfully. Volunteers from the Holden Beach Turtle Watch Program assisted the little guys in their trek to the sea.

As the first baby emerged from the nest it was greeted with applause and a chorus of “Happy Birthday.”

Counting this one, there were 30 turtle nests on Holden Beach this summer. Of them one is confirmed as a green turtle nest and another is thought to perhaps also be a green turtle nest.

All of the rest are loggerheads, which are the most commonly found kinds of turtle nesting along the beaches of Brunswick County.

This weekend (8/12 -8/15) Cape Fear Sailfish Classic comes to nearby Ocean Isle Beach (20 minutes from Holden Beach- 15 by water!).

The CFSC was started by dedicated recreational fisherman for recreational fisherman.

This event is designed to promote fun and those who want to pursue the challenge of locating these beautiful species and practice the art of proper bait presentation, the use of “teasers” top attract and locate the fish, and the art of “drop back” with circle hooks to promote a effective hook up and safe release of the fish.

Sailfish are perhaps the fastest species of fish, they are known to “free jump” and to “ball baits” as well as to “slap the baits” with their bills in order to stun their prey. When the fish picks up the bait, typically the angler wants to see the bite, optimally you want the reel in free spool or very light drag.

When the fish picks it up, one should feel the speed of the reel pick up and apply gently pressure with the thumb to the spool. Once the fish has sped away for 5 seconds, it’s time to “lock up” the drag and watch as the sailfish makes an acrobatic leap in an all-out attempt to throw the hook.

A proper circle hook-set will occur in the corner of the sails jaw. After a 10-30 minute fight, the sails, which all generally measure about 35-70 lbs and somewhere around 72-88 inches in length, should be boatside ready for the mate to work the leader to the boat. This is truly “hunting for fish”, with current, temperature change, and the presence of large schools of bait being very important.

These fish are known to come inshore during late summer and congregate in the areas around the Tower, the Horseshoe, the Jungle, and anywhere which holds bait.

Because of the rig you will be fishing, there is less chance of other predator’s fish, such as sharks, barracuda, or kings taking the bait. Dolphinfish, however, are frequent acrobatic visitors and great eating!

Don’t miss this! Da Howlies will hit the stage at 6:30pm this Sunday night at the pavilion, under the bridge at the end of Jordan Boulevard as part of the Holden Beach NC Summer Concert Series.

Five musicians from Wilmington, NC, got together back in 2002 for a little old time pickin’ and grinnin’. But it wasn’t bluegrass or country or folk music that this quintet was laying down. It was the classic sounds of the Hawaiian Islands, tinged with a touch of down home flavor.

It all started with Wilmington actor Zach Hanner got a shiny new Martin ukulele for Christmas. Hanner and fellow actor, musician and steel guitar virtuoso Bill Ladd (Johnny Quest, Jolene, Two Dollar Pistols) got together with “Dawson’s Creek” and “One Tree Hill” cameraman John McIntyre for a little session.

Seth Moody, a classically trained upright bass player, threw his low end in to the mix and the lineup was complete. Taking their name from derogatory Hawaiian term for tourists, the boys quickly learned numerous tunes from the ‘30s and ‘40s Hawaiian jazz era.

Numbers like “Little Grass Shack,” “Tiny Bubbles” and “Sweet Leilani” melded with traditional Hawaiian numbers like “The Hukilau Song” and “Hawaiian War Chant.” It wasn’t long before the band had more than a dozen originals and had added quirky covers of some of their favorite songs.

Where else would you hear the classic Harry Owen tune “On The Beach At Waikiki” mixed with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Freebird?” As all the members are good Southern boys, they decided to mix in some bluegrass tones and some classic country elements as well.

Covering Johnny Cash, Roger Miller and John Prine, they’ve even been known to bust out a bluegrass cop of Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice,” complete with G-rated lyrics for mixed audiences. And with a seasoned lineup of knowledgeable musicians, they are often able to accommodate requests, provided that Hanner knows the lyrics.

Summer time on the Carolina Coast finds Da Howlies incredibly busy and their shows are often sold out and always well attended. One unique aspect of this band is that their fan base ranges from five year olds to eighty-five year olds. Their music has universal summer time appeal and even true Hawaiians find themselves tearing up when they hear a song like Randy Farden’s “Beautiful Kauai.”

But these guys just aren’t fun musicians. They’re also cut-ups and class clowns as well so expect the time between songs to be filled with jokes and frivolity. While the corn factor may sometimes be higher than “Hee Haw,” the jokes are better written. So if you’re looking for that sound that will whisk you away to an island paradise, look no further than Da Howlies. ‘Dis music is “No Ka Oi!” (the best!) Mahalo and Aloha, Zach and Da Howlies For booking email dahowlies@hotmail.com or call (910) 262-2245

The planetarium, at 7625 High Market St. in The Village at Sunset Beach, is on its summer schedule now and opens at noon Tuesdays through Saturdays.
The Ingram Planetarium offers a number astronomy and science programs.

Displays abound in the planetarium’s Paul Dennis Science Hall, and free family activities are offered at 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 19.

Check out “Navigating the Seas,” covering the function of basic tools used in celestial navigation.

On Wednesdays, the featured program is “Turtle Talk,” with Sunset Beach Turtle Patrol volunteers teaching about the life cycle of sea turtles and their work to save them.

Thursdays are “Sun Fun Day.” Learn how the sun works, look through a solar telescope (weather permitting), and participate in other sun-related activities.

The planetarium’s 85-seat Sky Theater simulates a perfectly dark, starry night, and it is unsafe to move around during shows. Late arrivals are not admitted to the theater. All shows are one hour or less.

The show schedule through Sept. 4 kicks off each day at 1 p.m. with “Astronaut,” a new show appropriate for all ages. Experience a rocket launch from inside the body of an astronaut while exploring amazing visualizations of space. Float around the Space Shuttle and watch Chad, an animated test astronaut, as he learns about the perils of space.

The 2 p.m. show features “Oasis in Space.” Voyage through the solar system and deep into the universe in search of water, the key ingredient to life on earth. Learn about our solar system and the universe. It’s suitable for ages 8 and older.

At 3 p.m., the planetarium features “Zula Patrol: Under the Weather,” which is best suited for a younger audience. Join the team from the planet Zula as they use the pet Gorga to collect and learn about weather here on Earth and across the solar system.

The featured show at 4 p.m. is “Seven Wonders,” recommended for ages 9 and older. Turn back time and witness the seven ancient wonders of the world as they have not been seen for thousands of years. Then journey through space and see seven cosmic wonders as never seen before.

At 5 and 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 19, the planetarium offers laser music shows. Laser music programs are like a rock concert without the band, and they are loud.

Admission per show is $8 adults and $6 for senior adults and children ages 3-16. Those interested in seeing more than one show will receive a $1 discount.
Memberships are available. Groups should call for advance reservations and instructions.

Call 575-0033 or visit www.ingramplanetarium.org for more information.
