In 1953, Holden Beach had grown to include approximately 300 homes and added a turnbridge, also known as a turn-table bridge.
This turnbridge was located to the east of the current bridge on Jordan Boulevard and the Holden Beach Causeway.
Despite Hurricane Hazel’s devsstating visit on Oct. 15, 1954, which destroyed hundreds of homes and structures, the island continued to grow and was incorporated in 1969.
For 32 years, the iconic Old Holden Beach Bridge provided easy and safe access to the island and was used for evacuations as needed.
But the as road and boat traffic starting increasing in the early 1980s causing many road delays and frustrating locals, workers and vacationers plans were put in place to replace the bridge with the span bridge that now serves the island!
